Now I consider myself to be an automotive photographer. I take pictures of cars, nippy ones, sporty ones, classic ones, and of course motorbikes that catch my eye.
Imagine my quandary then, when presented with this supercool bubble that even kids can drive!
There’s no denying it’s a brilliant toy and if I was a 14 year old boy it would be on my Christmas wish list but I can’t decide whether it’s a street smart car or a suped up bike. The doors don’t help either.
The doors are an optional extra, as they’re not needed day to day. If it wasn’t so fast and such a buzz to drive, it might be in mobility scooter territory!
As I got closer though and started playing about with it, positioning it this way and that I saw the appeal and realised that maybe it is all that.
It’s a Twizy from Renault, powered by batteries, 2 people can ride comfortably. It has everything you need to make it road safe and in places like Germany 14 year old kids are driving them to school on a moped licence. Its top speed is 50mph so it’s not a car you want to get stuck behind on the middle lane of the M25, but it does the job and it does it with a grin.
Renault have launched this as part of their zero emissions program. It’s their greenest vehicle yet. Not surprisingly it takes up very little space too.
This modern urban ride needed a modern urban scene in order to pitch it in the right light. Nothing sprung to mind at first and I thought short of getting it on the set of ‘World War Z’ I was going to have problems. So imagine my surprise when just around the block I came across a golden honeycomb structure that was perfect for the job. With the steps and the courtyards it was the perfect place to play.
This building is a university too which seemed spot on as we bet had we shot on a weekday many of the students would have been champing at the bit wanting to have a spin in a Twizy.
As it was, we had the place to ourselves and found this compact car could be driven into the smallest of spaces.
