Every car I shoot has its own USP. It’s either great as a nippy city car, excellent on long winding roads “Italian Job” style or capable of climbing the most hostile landscapes in the middle of the Moors. The car usually gives me an idea of where the shoot will take place. If it’s urban, we’ll choose a city or studio (adding the city in post), if it’s a sports we’ll choose a race circuit to show the capability of supreme speeds. If it’s a 4WD we’ll choose somewhere in the country that has rocks and streams waiting to be disturbed by a four wheeled beast.
The Mitsu ASX was a bit different. It’s a car that can do it all and as such needed not one or two locations but four to show off its prowess in forests, round lakes and in the city and studio.
It all adds variety while keeping me on my toes as each location requires different ideas, alternative preparation, changeable lighting, not only was the ASX showing off its versatility, so was I.
We began in a forest miles from anywhere, our cyclist models tackling a freezing cold location. This wasn’t too bad as the canopy of trees provided enough protection from the snow showers – we just needed to be wary of low flying birdlife!
Moving swiftly down country to the lakeside location we had a perfect plan in place, in the middle of Feb we were shooting a scene from a hot summer’s day. All we needed was a little sunlight to glisten off the water as we shot a series of frames of a family messing about in canoes on the water.
The perfect, active, healthy, family day out, made possible with the versatility of the Mitsu ASX, made impossible with the variability of the weather. Our cameras were dressed and undressed more often than a best supporting actress nominee at the Oscars. The models would dive for cover with each rain storm while we, the crew and clients, were left quite damp, very cold and wishing the sun would get its hat on before nightfall.
We did it, just but were now ready for a little luxury, back to modern society where the streets are paved with bright lights, the shops sell steaming hot coffee and there’s a loo within spitting distance, and spitting it was. We got drenched on the city streets!
After showing off the style of the ASX in a bustling urban environment we returned to the sanctuary of the studio to complete the shoot.
I’m pretty confident it’s all in the bag as despite the wind chill and the shivering, the shots show no sign of our suffering, they just show the Mitsu/Agency/Harniman teams ability to operate in all weathers, whatever the terrain!
Check back in a few weeks when hopefully the finished images will be released.
